Some Day Trips Around Belgium

On Friday a small group of us decided to independently visit Ghent. Ghent is the largest city in the region of East Flanders. It is also full of churches, and like Bruges, is a Medieval city. On the left is a picture of Saint Bavo's Cathedral. It was stunning! And definitely the most impressive church I have seen in Belgium. It immediately rivals the churches of Italy.
One thing that I loved about this Church is that it is full of symbolism. In the background of the picture on the right is a pulpit called "The triumph of Truth over Time". At the bottom is Father Time cowering to a woman with a book. And above is a reenactment of the Biblical story of the snake and apple. It was fun to try and figure out the various lessons and stories embedded throughout the church.

Due to the fact that we were independently exploring the city, we did not have specific destinations in mind. Instead, we let ourselves wander around. This always has its pros and cons, but one pro is the random things you find. For instance, we found a walkway that was covered in graffiti. Here are a few pictures of some of my favorite images.

Like I mentioned, Ghent is Medieval town like Bruges. They also both have a intricate network of canals running through the city. Naturally, we had to take a boat around the beautiful city. So far, the boat tours have been my favorite way to see a city. It gives one a nice overview of the city and an interesting perspective. Plus it is less tiring :)
